          Trimester 3: Introduction to Ecosystems

          NEW! (April 11th, 2012)
Our ecosystem will begin this coming week!  Our unit will begin with fourth grade making observations of how living and non-living things depend on each other in a pond ecosystem.  Remind your fourth grader that a good scientific observation is supported by a good scientific drawing!  A good scientific drawing includes details, color, labels, and measurements (when and where appropriate), and a title.

In the weeks to come, fourth grade will add mosquito fish, pond snails, and several different plants to the aquarium portion of their ecosystem.  Simultaneously, we will study crickets, isopods (rolly-poley "bugs"), rye grass, alfalfa, and mustard seed in our terrarium.  We will soon begun to discuss how the color, size, shape, and movement of our critters works to their advantage in this particular ecosystem.
