Trimester 2: Changes (Solids, Liquids, and Gases)
NEW! (January 10th, 2012)
Our second unit of study, Changes, is now underway! The students have begun to explore the properites of matter. We used a variety of small objects (sandpaper, steel marble, red pipe cleaner, etc.) as we compared and contrasted what makes each of these solid objects a solid. We will discover that solids may share one or more property. As part of our exploration of properties of solids, our first graders will study magnets. We will learn about magnetic force and magnetic poles. First graders are in for a surprise when they discover that some metals are magnetic, but other metals are not! Shh...don't tell your child this just yet! As we continue to study solids we will learn that a solid has a definite size and shape.
